I know, it’s almost a spooky coincidence…

(Reuters) – An air strike in Yemen targeting al Qaeda missed its mark and killed a mediator, prompting members of his tribe to blow up an oil pipeline in clashes that followed, a provincial official said on Tuesday. Separately, a Yemeni government official said a U.S. couple taken hostage by tribesmen were released on Tuesday, a day after they were seized near the capital Sanaa.

A Yemeni website aligned with the opposition said the strike was carried out by a drone, a weapon that Yemen is not believed to have. U.S. forces have used drones in the past in Yemen, but a U.S. diplomat declined to say if Washington was involved. The strike could heighten anti-U.S. sentiment and broaden al Qaeda’s appeal among powerful Yemeni tribes, threatening efforts to stabilise a country neighbouring oil power Saudi Arabia and busy international shipping lanes, analysts said.

Meanwhile just a skip across the water this gets my quote of the day, an intentionally or unintentionally acute piece of satire from a BBC journo reporting on the ‘uneven playing field‘ of Ethiopia’s election-

“The people’s vote will not be overturned by foreign forces,” said the prime minister [Meles Zenawi], a US ally against Islamist militants in neighbouring Somalia.

Which is about as close as the Beeb will get to implying (if you choose to read it that way)- US Puppet fiddles election. Apparently the US and its bases are not ‘foreign forces‘ to the obedient Zenawi (once named the world’s 16th worst dictator, I know 16th, Washington just can’t get the staff these days, Suharto, Pinochet, they were second to no one!).

Quite why grown adults need to be reminded to judge a government and politicians on what they DO not what they SAY (I know that blows the entire chattering class bloggerrati content factory out of the water, but hey, Rome Burns), the ConDems now show their conception of civil liberties- Brain Haw arrested, he survived numerous attempts by New Labour to destroy him now the Tory PM and Tory Mayor have acted on the day the Queen laid out their agenda, so again, judge on what is done not what is said, so far ConDems on civil liberties- FAIL. Boris johnson is now moving to quash the entire peace camp. So Lib Dems…gonna stand up for Civil Liberties and see Haw returned to his protest?

Hilariously (in a gallows fashion), Israelis with yachts are so offended by the Free Gaza aid ships that they took to the seas to protest…um, not starving and besieging people to death?!?! The serious points are Israelis are benefiting from privilege afforded by the apartheid laws of their country, their protest if done by Palestinians would be met with violence, secondly Palestinians are not even allowed to fish in their own waters without being attacked by IDF gunboats (to starve them and to try and claim Palestinian territorial waters as Israeli so all the lovely gas under them can be stolen). So this languorous day out having a sail is not only ludicrous for its protest/political content, it is also an offensive example of the callousness of the privileged, recalling an earlier picture of Israelis watching the attacks on Gaza as they enjoy a picnic or indeed Sun City. But having said all that, it would be nice of all protests consisted of…having a sunbathe on a yacht (also apparently if you bring medicine, building supplies and books to Palestinians it transmogrifies your country into Iran or something, I mean if I was paying for a swanky banner like that I’d at least have it make sense). Labour dismissed the plans which they say sound similar to £15bn of efficiency savings due to be introduced this year anyway.

Alistair Darling, the shadow chancellor, said: “The Liberal-Conservative coalition have got to come clean on the detail of what these cuts mean. Today they dodged the House of Commons, because they didn’t want to have to explain the real impact on firms and families.

“Today, George Osborne wouldn’t say how many jobs this package would cost. But it is already clear that these cuts will seriously affect support for business, mean less jobs for young people, and hit student places for this September.”

So the opposition’s argument is

  1. Same as what we were going to do, in fact less.
  2. So all the criticisms made of it would apply just as much to a New Labour administration’s cuts.
  3. But we’ll make them anyway as lazy Westminster hacks have to fill their days with something besides meals on expenses and the redundant noise of the media may still keep chumps anaesthetised.

So our choices were/are what exactly? The party leadership are glommed around the centre right like shit on a toothbrush and equally unpalatable. With two Left contenders (John McDonnell, Diane Abbott) for the leadership of a party that did once represent people hopes might be raised, although the usual New Labour /Next Labour suspects are already treating the race as one between the Milibands and Balls (does that make Burnham the taint?). As Richard Murphy shows the country is run for the benefit of a rich minority which last time I checked is not so much democracy more the oligarchy thingy. If the best a whatever Labour opposition can do is whine- Oh we were going to do that, um (remembers job of opposition, the appearance of dissent) but what you’re doing is bad- not only will logic be taking a battering for the next five years but it’ll be nothing compared to the hope of lefties in Labour and the those who live on the median income or less (or the majority who live below the average income).

We will soon have a new page added to our website called witnessgaza.org. You will be able to follow us as we journey to Gaza over the next two weeks. You can watch our own ‘video reports’ twice a day, reports from the boats and from Gaza. Everything on the page is connected to make it easier for you to access TWITTER, Facebook, YouTube and FLICKR. Watch for it in the next day or so.

Amid cheers and waving of Turkish and Palestinian flags, the second ship to join the Freedom Flotilla left Istanbul this afternoon. Sponsored by the Turkish humanitarian organization, Insani Yardim Vakfi (IHH), the ship will carry 600 passengers to Gaza as part of the ‘blockade busting’ flotilla. It joins eight other boats coming from three other countries carrying 10,000 tons of supplies to the Palestinian people, supplies that have been denied to them by Israel. The Irish/Malaysian ship, the MV Rachel Corrie, is on her way to the Mediterranean. The Greek/Swedish cargo ship, the passenger boat from the European Campaign and the Free Gaza passenger boats are ready to leave Greece this week.

We will all meet in international waters off the coast of Gaza, turn and steam into Gaza City port sometime between May 28 and June 1 depending on the weather.

Said John Ging, Head of United Nation’s Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in theGaza Strip since 2006 said,  “We recommend the world send ships to the shores of Gaza, and we believe that Israel would not stop these vessels because the sea is open, and many human rights organizations have been successful in previous similar steps, and proved that breaking the siege on Gaza is possible.”

The Free Gaza Movement welcomes statements by the Irish Government to ensure the safety of the passengers and cargo currently making their way to the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Israelis are nervous.
The Palestinians from the occupied West Bank to Gaza to the diaspora are ecstatic.
The internationals are determined.
The boats are ready.
The world waits.

With a hat tip to Beau Bo D’or, for putting me on to Shawn Colvin via a Jane Siberry connection, this is from A Few Small Repairs

And Jane Siberry, a beguiling artist who at present is letting people download her work, have a listen, pay it forward. She is on her Salon tour-

Take your favourite singer — be it Morrissey, Britney or Iggy — and try to imagine him or her agreeing to perform in your front room — on condition that you squeeze in 25 guests who will make a donation of whatever you think appropriate. There’s one contractual rider (except there isn’t really a contract): the artist would like you to provide two apples, a lemon and some hot water. A bed for the night would be helpful, and if the artist gets up at 3am to raid the biscuit jar, please don’t mind.

No, you can’t imagine this — not unless your favourite singer is Jane Siberry, whose “salon” tour of fans’ houses has arrived from Australia and New Zealand

This is from a New Zealand show and perhaps her best known track ‘Calling All Angels’ which got me into her when it was on the soundtrack to Wim Wenders ‘Until The End of The World‘. A shimmering and enthralling live version, tour details here.
